Directed by André Øvredal, Passenger is a supernatural horror film that modernizes classic "hitchhiker" urban legends into a tense road nightmare. The story follows a young woman, Maddie, and her fiancé, Tyler, who pack up their lives to embark on a cross-country adventure inside a retrofitted mobile micro-home. Their dream of an off-grid lifestyle takes a horrific turn on an isolated stretch of highway when they stumble upon a gruesome car accident. After stopping to help at the crash site, they unknowingly violate an ancient, sacred "rule of the road." In doing so, they inadvertently pick up a malevolent supernatural entity that begins relentlessly pursuing them, forcing the couple to decode cryptic traveler folklore to outrun a presence that refuses to let them escape.
The film anchors its high-velocity scares with a small, focused cast that heightens the script's intense claustrophobia and atmospheric dread. Lou Llobell stars as Maddie, who finds herself fighting for survival against both the entity and the psychological weight of the open road. Jacob Scipio plays Tyler, her intensely optimistic fiancé whose desire for freedom lands them in jeopardy. Academy Award winner Melissa Leo joins the cast as Diana, a mysterious figure the couple encounters who understands the deeper, darker mythology of the highways, while Joseph Lopez portrays The Passenger, the shape-shifting, demonic presence stalking them. Clocking in at 94 minutes and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film blends isolating rural backdrops with striking practical effects to deliver a terrifying ride that explores the dark side of complete isolation.
