Released by A24, The Death of Robin Hood is a grim, hyper-realistic medieval drama that completely strips away the romanticism of the classic English folklore hero. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), the film portrays Robin Hood not as a charismatic, merry outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor, but as a battle-worn, grizzled, and deeply traumatized thief. Haunted by a violent past that includes killing civilians, an aging Robin is constantly hunted by the vengeful relatives of his past victims. After an incredibly brutal battle alongside his surviving partner, Little John (played by Bill Skarsgård), Robin is left gravely wounded and on the brink of death.
Desperate to keep him alive, Little John brings Robin to a secluded island priory. There, he is placed in the care of Sister Brigid—portrayed by Jodie Comer—a mysterious and stoic prioress who offers the dying outlaw a grueling final path toward spiritual salvation and peace. Hugh Jackman leads the cast with a solemn, raw intensity as the titular Robin Hood, delivering a performance defined by physical exhaustion and profound guilt. Rather than a traditional, high-flying action epic, Sarnoski treats the story as a somber, slow-burn psychological character study about the heavy toll of a lifetime of crime and murder.
