Directed by Daniel Roher, Tuner is a unique crime drama and character study that blends a high-stakes heist thriller with a tender mentorship story. The plot follows Niki White (Leo Woodall), a brilliant but frustrated musical prodigy whose career is derailed by hyperacusis, a condition that makes normal sounds painfully loud. He finds solace working as an apprentice to Harry Horowitz (Dustin Hoffman), a warm, elderly piano technician facing crushing medical debt.
Desperate to help his mentor, Niki discovers that his hypersensitive hearing allows him to perfectly track the falling tumblers inside high-security vaults. This accidental superpower drags him into a dangerous criminal underworld where his exceptional skills are exploited for high-end safecracking.
As Niki dives deeper into a world of crime orchestrated by the calculating criminal operator Uri (Lior Raz), he must balance the immense danger of his secret life with a budding romance. He falls for Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu), an ambitious music composition student who reminds him of the artistic life he left behind. Driven by an energetic, fast-paced editing style and an improvisational jazz score, the film turns the technical precision of piano tuning and safecracking into a gripping cinematic experience. Ultimately, Tuner succeeds as more than a standard thriller; it is a heart-wrenching, beautifully acted exploration of sound, trauma, and the lengths an isolated young man will go to protect the surrogate family that took him in.
