Elon Musk has abandoned his aspirations to save the government money as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He has now shifted his focus to repairing his brand and his businesses. Sales at Tesla fell 13% in the first quarter of 2025, and two SpaceX ships exploded this year. Evidently, his plans to slash Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid weren't widely accepted, which were preceded by the removal of thousands of government employees via firings, resignations, and buyouts. President Trump expressed his desire to keep Musk around as long as he could and vowed that DOGE will continue without him at the helm. DOGE claims to have saved 162 billion dollars thus far, almost a paltry 5% of the 2 trillion dollars they were hoping for, but apparently government spending is still on the rise. Though Musk's approach may have been aggressive, the country simply can't afford to spend money the way it does.
