Was 'Fackham Hall' a good movie?

Posted 12/05/2025

The 2025 film Fackham Hall is an energetic British period comedy and murder-mystery spoof that has been described as a mashup of Downton Abbey and the absurd humor of Airplane! The story is set in the chaotic, opulent English manor of Fackham Hall, home to the aristocratic Davenport family, headed by Lord Davenport (Damian Lewis) and Lady Davenport (Katherine Waterston). The plot centers on Eric Noone (Ben Radcliffe), a lovable pickpocket who cons his way into working as a low-ranking servant. Amidst the farcical atmosphere created by the family's crumbling finances and the disastrous wedding plans of the eldest daughter to her caddish cousin, Archibald (Tom Felton), Eric begins a forbidden romance with the sharp and independent youngest daughter, Rose Davenport (Thomasin McKenzie).

However, the chaos escalates into an absurd whodunit when a murder occurs at the manor, and Eric, the outsider, is immediately framed as the prime suspect. With his future—and potentially Rose's—perilously uncertain, the young couple must work to navigate the ridiculous high-society suspects and the official investigation led by Inspector Watt (Tom Goodman-Hill). Co-written by comedian Jimmy Carr (who also appears as the Vicar), the film uses its stellar ensemble cast to satirize the stiff manners and class divides of traditional period dramas with fast-paced, irreverent comedy.
