Was 'Over Your Dead Body' a good movie?

Posted 4/24/2026

Over Your Dead Body is a darkly comedic action-thriller directed by Jorma Taccone (MacGruber, Popstar). An American remake of the 2021 Norwegian film The Trip, the story centers on Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving), a dysfunctional and deeply unhappy couple who retreat to a remote cabin in upstate New York under the guise of saving their marriage. In reality, both have separately arrived with meticulous plans to murder the other to cash in on a life insurance policy and start fresh. Their lethal squabbling is interrupted when the cabin is infiltrated by a trio of escaped convicts, forcing the warring spouses to form a reluctant, blood-soaked alliance to survive the night.

The film features a stacked supporting cast including Timothy Olyphant and Keith Jardine as the menacing escapees, with Juliette Lewis playing a corrections officer who has assisted in their flight. Produced by the action-heavy team at 87North (John Wick, Bullet Train), the movie is noted for its "gonzo" live-action violence and "Looney Tunes" levels of physical comedy.

While the first act focuses on the sharp, biting dialogue between Segel’s failed director character and Weaving’s struggling actress, the second half leans into visceral, high-octane carnage. By blending Taccone’s signature irreverent humor with intense fight choreography, Over Your Dead Body explores the toxic resentments of a long-term relationship through the lens of a brutal and absurd home-invasion thriller.
