Ella McCay is a political comedy-drama and the first feature film in fifteen years from legendary writer-director James L. Brooks. Set in an unnamed state in 2008, the story centers on Emma Mackey (Sex Education) as the titular Ella McCay, an idealistic and highly-driven 34-year-old Lieutenant Governor. Her orderly life is thrown into immediate chaos when her mentor, the popular Governor Bill (played by Albert Brooks), suddenly accepts a cabinet position, instantly thrusting Ella into the state's highest office. This unexpected promotion forces her to juggle immense professional responsibilities and crises—including a potentially career-ending scandal—with the dramatic pressures of her turbulent personal life.
As Ella attempts to manage her high-stakes new role, she must simultaneously navigate a complicated and demanding family. This includes her difficult and estranged father, Eddie McCay (played by Woody Harrelson), her beloved Aunt Helen (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), who attempts to mediate familial tensions, and her sensitive, slightly overwhelmed husband, Ryan (played by Jack Lowden). The film is a blend of Brooks’s signature humanistic comedy and political satire, exploring the collision of one woman's unwavering political idealism with the messy, often inconvenient realities of her domestic life, all while she attempts to govern and find her footing in a world that is suddenly watching her every move.
