We are an inch away from the MLB playoffs, and the table is set for an intensely entertaining run to the Commissioner’s Trophy. The American League brings three powerhouses from the exact same division into the fray—with the Rays, Yankees, and White Sox. The National League features a balanced gauntlet of two teams from each division vying for glory. It’s a long road ahead starting on September 29, and the pieces are in place for a chaotic October.
In the first National League Wild Card Series matchup, Walt Weiss managed the Braves to a comfortable lead over the Phillies down the stretch, boasting a dominant 9–4 regular-season record against them. The Braves boast the elite pitching of Chris Sale and the middle-of-the-order power of Matt Olson, while the Phillies are hoping their aggressive trade-deadline acquisitions can catapult them past their division rivals.
Over in the other National League Wild Card Series, the Padres have to figure out a way to overcome the Cubs, who beat them during the regular season. The Cubs are probably not the opponent the Padres were hoping to face, as Chicago famously punished them 23 to 3 back on July 1st. Former pitcher turned manager of the Padres, Craig Stammen, will need to come up with something unorthodox if he hopes to advance and face off against the Brewers in the next round.
As the rest of the bracket brawls in the opening round, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers are chilling out with well-earned byes. The Dodgers enter as a juggernaut universally favored to make a deep push, leaning on their star-studded pedigree, while the Brewers, fresh off a stellar 100-win campaign, rely on elite run-prevention and bullpen depth.
In the first American League Wild Card Series clash, the Houston Astros vs. the Chicago White Sox stands out as one of the more compelling series of the bracket. The White Sox pack serious offensive punch, but they have to walk into Houston to face an Astros team with an incredible institutional memory for deep October runs. Houston has a knack for finding another gear in October, making this a grueling, momentum-swinging battle.
Nothing beats postseason baseball rooted in a historic rivalry. The Yankees against the Boston Red Sox is head-to-head matchup that has been razor-thin all year, with the Yankees barely edging the Red Sox 7 games to 6. The Yankees have fought valiantly all season without superstar slugger Aaron Judge, who has battled injuries, most recently dealing with a troublesome calf. If Judge returns at full strength, he completely alters the landscape of New York's offense - he could definitely be the X-factor. However, if Judge is sidelined, Boston’s resilient lineup is more than capable of capitalizing.
The Tampa Bay Rays captured the top spot through textbook analytical precision, stellar defense, and relentless depth, making them a trendy pick to reach the Fall Classic. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians won their division behind lockdown arms like Cade Smith, but they sit waiting to see which dangerous survivor crawls out of the AL Central/West meat grinder, as they will be evenly matched with either foe.
