Uploaded imageThe President of South Africa, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, visited the White House and met with President Trump on May 21, 2025. President Trump claims a genocide is being perpetrated in South Africa and classified some White South Africans as refugees, chartering a plane for their relocation to America. We found no evidence of killing on a scale supporting the President's assertion. Between 1990 and 2024, 1,363 white farmers were killed in South Africa, averaging almost 57 people per year over 24 years, or slightly more than one person per week across a country spanning 470,900 mi². In comparison, since October 7, 2023, 53,939 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza strip. The day this topic was posted marked 85 weeks, equating to approximately 635 deaths per week in an area roughly 141 mi². It seems irresponsible for the president to characterize the situation in South Africa as genocide. Genocide is defined as the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group. The definition of a "large number" is somewhat vague. However, the continuous and widespread murder of a population, whether rapid or prolonged over decades, better reflects the meaning of genocide. The fact that Tribal Nations native to the lands now called the Americas were driven to near extinction through mass slaughter constitutes a genocide. Events such as the Transatlantic slave trade, where millions of Africans were killed and died from starvation and disease, constitute the destruction of that group, thus classifying it as a genocide... The murders of Jewish people during Hitler's regime, known as the Holocaust, and the killing of Tutsi people by the Hutu in Rwanda, where nearly 1,000,000 people were killed in 100 days, would qualify as genocide. Sadly, there are too many examples to cite.

Do you believe farmers in South Africa are experiencing genocide?
