It's almost time for back-to-school. Are you ready?

Posted 7/16/2026

The phrase "going back to school" usually conjures images of teenagers picking out backpacks or college freshmen moving into dorms. But for a growing number of young adults, returning to the classroom happens while also managing a household, a career, and the relentless demands of raising their own children.

For the kids, back-to-school season is a whirlwind of social energy. It is a time for reuniting with peers after a long summer, showing off the latest fashion trends in the hallways, and sizing up new teachers. There is a thrilling sense of advancement, whether they are navigating middle school for the first time or finally stepping into the spotlight as high school seniors. Their worries, while intensely real to them, center on fitting in, finding their classrooms, and academic growth.

For young adult parents, however, the academic journey is a high-stakes balancing act of an entirely different kind. While kids manage homework and extracurriculars, student-parents work a "triple shift"—attending college classes, earning a living, and parenting. Crucial study hours are usually carved out of precious sleep.

Every hour spent analyzing a textbook is an hour not spent playing in the park, reading bedtime stories, or preparing family dinners. Parents often battle the constant feeling that they are shortchanging their children today for the promise of a better tomorrow. Additionally, adding the soaring cost of reliable childcare to tuition and textbooks can feel insurmountable. Unlike traditional students, parents cannot easily cut back to part-time hours without directly impacting household stability.

Yet, there is a silver lining. Parents aren't just rewriting their own futures—they are actively modeling resilience and the lifelong value of education for their children.
