Girls Like Girls is a nostalgic coming-of-age romance film directed and co-written by pop singer-songwriter Hayley Kiyoko. The feature-length drama serves as her directorial debut, expanding on the universe of her viral 2015 music video and her best-selling 2023 young adult novel of the same name.
Set during a sun-drenched, hazy summer in 2006, the film follows 17-year-old Coley (played by Maya da Costa), a guarded teenager who moves to a small, rural town in Oregon to live with her well-meaning but estranged father, portrayed by Zach Braff. While navigating the grief of her mother's recent passing and trying to adapt to her new environment, Coley crosses paths with a tight-knit local friend group. Among them is Sonya (Myra Molloy), a charismatic and popular girl who quickly pulls Coley out of her shell.
As the summer progresses, the intense bond between the two teenagers evolves into an unexpected romance. The narrative beautifully explores the tender, often tumultuous experience of first love, while both girls navigate deep-seated vulnerabilities. Coley fights her own self-doubt to embrace intimacy, while Sonya handles the confusion of discovering her identity and stepping outside the expectations of a heteronormative social circle—represented in part by her distant boyfriend Trenton, played by Levon Hawke. Backed by an original, nostalgic soundtrack from Kiyoko herself, the movie captures a dream-like lens of self-discovery, identity, and LGBTQ+ representation.
